Wearing a face mask to smell your own bad breath, what can you do?

The pandemic of COVID-19 has forced millions of peoples wearing face masks to reduce transmission of this virus. Wearing a mask is a symbol of good citizenship nowadays, but a new problem is emerging: many peoples can smell their own bad breath or halitosis. Studies show that more than 50 percent of adults have had bad breath at some point in their lives and don’t notice it. This is because our nose has got used to the trace amount of the bad breath from mouth and ignores it. When a face mask is put on to cover our mouth and nose, the bad breath concentration is increased to let our nose smell it for a few minutes, and then be ignored again. This phenomenon is due to the self-attenuation of the olfactory nerve to the concentration of odors.

What Causes Bad Breath?

There are a number of reasons you might have bad breath. But major reasons come from the health and cleaning condition of your mouth.

Gum Disease Bad breath that just won’t go away or a constant bad taste in your mouth can be a warning sign of advanced gum disease, which is caused by a sticky, cavity-causing bacteria called plaque. In this case, see your dentist.

Bacteria Bad breath can happen anytime due to the hundreds of types of bad breath-causing bacteria that naturally live in your mouth and tongue. Your mouth and tongue also act like a natural incubator that allows these bacteria to grow. When you eat, bacteria feed on the food left in your mouth and leaves bad-smelling sulfur-containing waste products behind.
